LSSA Conference 2010

We are happy to announce that the joint SAALA/LSSA Conference will be held in Pretoria.

The Linguistic Society of Southern Afirca(LSSA) and The Southern African Applied Linguistics Association(SAALA) in association with the School of Arts and the Department of Linguistics in the College of Human Sciences at UNISA announce the joint annual linguistic conference 2010 to be held in Pretoria, South Africa on 26-29 September 2010.

The LSSA and the SAALA are two scholarly societies that promote and co-ordinate the research, study and teaching of general and applied linguistics by means of the publication of an accredited journal and the organisation of a joint annual conference, which provides an opportunity for an exchange of ideas and for mutual stimulus to researchers in the field of language studies in Southern Africa.

In 2010, the conference organisers have committed themselves to supporting the South African Association of Language Teachers (SAALT) to get their activities on track again in a structured environment. The 2010 conference will thus have special SAALT activities and will include SAALT members.

The theme of the 2010 annual, joint conference is:

Languages change
- Languages change in terms of their structure, as well as in terms of their spread and usage patterns in communities.
- Languages change individuals and communities through their linguistic and cognitive development, through learning and education, as well as through language planning and development.
- Languages change relationships between individuals and communities in multilingual settings and through language use and intercultural interaction.
